Candidasa occupies a stretch of Bali’s eastern shore that most visitors never reach, and that is precisely its appeal. Here the tourist infrastructure thins out and the island reveals something closer to its essential self: a coastline of black volcanic sand and tumbled coral, backed by coconut groves that climb toward the flanks of Mount Agung. Inland from the coast, the ancient Bali Aga village of Tenganan lies barely a kilometre up a narrow road, its walled compounds and double-ikat weaving tradition representing a culture that predates the Hindu-Javanese influence found elsewhere on the island. The juxtaposition is striking: from a contemporary villa with infinity pool and ocean view, you can walk in minutes to a settlement that has maintained its customs essentially unchanged for centuries. This layering of old and new, sacred and secular, gives Candidasa a depth that more developed resort areas cannot replicate.
