Villa Zebra (3 Bedrooms)
Why We Recommend Villa Zebra (3 Bedrooms)
There are Ubud villas that gesture toward Balinese culture with a carved wooden panel here and a lotus motif there, and then there is Villa Zebra, where the commitment runs considerably deeper. Each of the three bedrooms is covered floor-to-ceiling in a distinct large-scale Balinese mural — intricate, hand-painted narratives that make every room feel like sleeping inside a work of art. Pair that with French doors that open directly onto the turquoise pool, and the boundary between bedroom and garden simply ceases to exist. You wake up, step outside, and you are already in the water.
The pool itself deserves separate mention. A built-in bar of black stone and white brick sits at the water’s edge with in-water seating — the sort of detail that turns an afternoon into an event. The villa sits in Petulu village, about 3km north of Ubud centre, which means you are far enough from the tourist strip to feel genuinely immersed in Bali, yet close enough to reach everything in 12 minutes. More importantly, Petulu is famous across Bali as the heron village: every evening around 5pm, thousands of white herons return to roost in the trees surrounding the village in a spectacle that still surprises people who have been watching it for years. Your terrace is essentially a front-row seat.
At low season rates, six guests pay approximately $67–$73 per person per night before tax (around $77–$84 inclusive of the 15.5% service and tax). For a three-bedroom private villa in northern Ubud with a pool bar, daily housekeeping, and a manager rated 9.5 out of 10 from 46 reviews, that is genuinely strong value. Mustika, the on-site manager, is name-checked across dozens of reviews for local knowledge and quiet efficiency — the kind of support that transforms a holiday rather than merely administering it.
What Makes It Special
Pool Terrace
all three bedrooms open directly onto the pool terrace, making the line between inside and outside nearly theoretical. Morning swim before coffee is the obvious default.
Pool bar with in-water seating
the black stone and white brick bar is built into the pool itself, with seats in the water. It is an unusually considered detail that elevates the entire outdoor space.
Spacious Bedrooms
each bedroom has its own distinct mural covering walls and ceiling. The artistic commitment is far beyond the decorative gestures found in most villa rentals.
The Petulu heron spectacle
at 5pm each evening, thousands of Javan pond herons and cattle egrets return to roost in the village trees. It is one of those Bali experiences that photographs do not do justice and most visitors miss entirely.
Stunning Views
the villa manager has built a genuine reputation across guest reviews for local expertise, proactive communication, and the ability to organise temple visits, cooking classes, and driver recommendations that go beyond a generic tourist list.
Before You Book
Access road is challenging
— the last 1–2km into Petulu is narrow, steep, and in poor condition. Arriving by scooter is difficult; a driver familiar with the route is strongly recommended, especially at night or in the wet season.
3-bedroom configuration
— Villa Zebra is the same physical property as the 4-bedroom listing, with one room kept locked for the 3BR configuration. Ideal for two couples or a family of up to six who want a dedicated space per couple plus a children’s or single room.
Dining Options
— breakfast is included, and a private chef can be arranged through management, but this is not a villa with a full-time in-house chef present by default. Plan ahead if you want multi-course private dinners.
Airport transfer is 1.5–2 hours
— Ngurah Rai Airport is roughly 90 minutes in normal traffic, longer during Bali’s increasingly unpredictable congestion. An early arrival and late departure on the same day is not comfortable. Budget the travel time genuinely.
Petulu is quiet and rural by design
— restaurants and nightlife require a drive. This is a villa that rewards guests who want immersion in Balinese village life over easy access to Ubud’s cafe strip. If your group wants to walk to dinner every night, look closer to Ubud centre.
