Why Stay in Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka belongs to a different register of travel entirely. Where other tropical destinations have expanded into sprawling resort corridors and villa-lined beachfronts, this teardrop-shaped island off the southern tip of India has remained beautifully, almost stubbornly, unhurried. The southern coastline unfolds in a sequence of palm-fringed bays, colonial-era forts, and fishing villages where stilt fishermen still balance above the morning surf as they have for generations. Inland, the landscape climbs through rubber plantations and spice gardens into the cool green silence of the Hill Country, where tea bushes carpet every slope in neat emerald rows and the air carries the scent of wild cardamom. This is a country where a two-hour drive fundamentally changes everything — the altitude, the cuisine, the architecture, the quality of the light. For travellers who have seen Bali and Thailand and want something genuinely different, Sri Lanka offers a depth of culture, landscape, and history that feels inexhaustible.
Our Sri Lanka collection is deliberately small — a tightly curated portfolio of private villas across the South Coast and Hill Country, each chosen for its architecture, its setting, and the quality of its hospitality. These are not cookie-cutter rentals. A villa on the south coast might be a restored colonial-era residence set within walled tropical gardens, its verandahs open to the sound of the Indian Ocean. In the highlands, expect converted tea estate bungalows with fireplaces, panoramic valley views, and the kind of enveloping quiet that city life makes you forget exists. Every villa in our Sri Lanka collection comes with a private pool, dedicated staff, and the sort of personal attention — a cook who prepares authentic rice and curry from family recipes, a manager who arranges everything from whale-watching boats to temple visits — that transforms a holiday into something far more intimate than any hotel could offer.
The South Coast is where most visitors begin, and it rewards that instinct generously. Galle Fort — a UNESCO World Heritage site built by the Portuguese and perfected by the Dutch — is one of the most atmospheric small towns in Asia, its rampart walks offering golden-hour views across the harbour while boutique galleries, spice traders, and candlelit restaurants fill the streets within the walls. Beyond Galle, the coastline stretches east through Unawatuna’s sheltered swimming bay, the surf breaks of Weligama, and on to Mirissa, where the beach curves in a perfect crescent and blue whales pass offshore between November and April. A villa on Sri Lanka’s south coast places you within easy reach of all of this — temple ruins half-hidden in jungle, sea turtle hatcheries, cinnamon plantations, and coastal roads where the only traffic is the occasional tuk-tuk overtaking a bullock cart.
The Hill Country is Sri Lanka’s other revelation. Rising above a thousand metres, the highlands around Ella and Haldummulla trade tropical heat for cool mountain air, panoramic tea plantations, and a pace of life that feels almost meditative. The famous railway from Kandy to Ella — often called one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world — threads through tunnels, across Nine Arch Bridge, and along ridgelines where the views drop away into blue-hazed valleys. Waterfalls cascade from every hillside. Buddhist temples perch on rocky outcrops above the clouds. And in the evenings, when mist rolls through the tea gardens and the temperature drops enough for a blanket, you understand why the British planters chose to build their finest bungalows here. Sri Lanka is still an emerging luxury villa destination, which is precisely its appeal — the landscapes are uncrowded, the welcome is genuine, and the sense of discovery is real.
Planning Your Sri Lanka Stay
Best Time to Visit
Sri Lanka's south and west coasts enjoy their driest weather from December to April, with January and February offering the most reliable sunshine along the southern shoreline. The Hill Country follows a similar pattern, though afternoon showers can roll in year-round at higher elevations — part of the charm rather than an inconvenience. May to September brings the southwest monsoon and rougher seas to the south coast, though the east coast enters its own dry season during these months. For the South Coast and Hill Country villas in our collection, the December-to-April window is ideal, with shoulder months offering lower rates and fewer visitors.
Getting There
Bandaranaike International Airport sits just north of Colombo and receives direct flights from London, Dubai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and major Indian cities. From the airport, the South Coast is roughly two and a half to four hours by private transfer, depending on your destination — Galle is the closest, with Mirissa and Weligama a little further east. The Hill Country requires a longer journey of four to five hours by road, or you can break the trip with a night on the coast before heading inland. We arrange private airport transfers for every booking, and the drive south — past coconut groves, river estuaries, and the occasional roadside fruit stall — is a gentle introduction to the island.
Getting Around
A private driver is the most comfortable way to explore Sri Lanka, and rates are remarkably affordable. Your villa manager can arrange a driver for day trips to Galle Fort, Mirissa for whale watching, or inland to waterfalls and tea factories — the flexibility of having your own car and driver makes an enormous difference on an island where the best experiences often lie down unmarked side roads. Tuk-tuks handle shorter local journeys with cheerful efficiency. For the Hill Country, the railway offers one of the world's great scenic rides and is worth building a day around. Internal flights between Colombo and the south coast are available but rarely necessary given the manageable driving distances.
Where to Eat
Sri Lanka's culinary identity is distinct and deeply satisfying. The foundation is rice and curry — not a single dish but a constellation of small bowls: dhal, coconut sambol, jackfruit curry, fish ambul thiyal, and half a dozen vegetable preparations, each layered with roasted spice and coconut milk. In Galle Fort, a new wave of restaurants blend Sri Lankan ingredients with contemporary technique — expect fresh-caught tuna with green chilli and pandan, or crab curry served in colonial dining rooms with ceiling fans turning overhead. Along the south coast, beachside restaurants in Mirissa and Weligama serve the morning catch grilled over coconut husks. In the Hill Country, estate bungalow dining is an experience in itself — multi-course dinners prepared by your villa's cook, eaten by candlelight with valley views. And everywhere, the tea is extraordinary.

Frequently Asked Questions
Sri Lanka is one of the most compelling emerging villa destinations in Asia. The island offers a combination of cultural depth, dramatic landscapes, and genuine warmth that more established destinations struggle to match. Because the luxury villa market here is still intimate rather than industrialised, properties tend to be architecturally distinctive — restored heritage homes, plantation bungalows, contemporary designs by noted architects — rather than formulaic. Staff-to-guest ratios are generous, hospitality is deeply personal, and the cost of a fully staffed private villa with pool, cook, and daily housekeeping represents exceptional value compared to equivalent properties elsewhere in the region.
The South Coast is remarkably rich in experiences. Galle Fort is a living heritage town — spend a morning exploring its ramparts, galleries, and gem traders before lunch in one of its courtyard restaurants. Whale watching from Mirissa (November to April) brings you within sight of blue whales and sperm whales in deep water just off the coast. Unawatuna and Jungle Beach offer sheltered swimming and snorkelling. Weligama is one of Asia's most forgiving surf breaks, ideal for beginners. Inland day trips take you to Sinharaja rainforest, working cinnamon plantations, and Buddhist temples carved into cave complexes. And the coast itself — golden sand, warm water, spectacular sunsets — is reason enough to do very little at all.
Bandaranaike International Airport is located north of Colombo. The drive south to Galle takes approximately two and a half hours via the Southern Expressway, which has dramatically cut travel times in recent years. Mirissa and Weligama are roughly three to three and a half hours from the airport. The Hill Country around Ella and Haldummulla is a longer journey of four to five hours by road. We arrange private airport transfers for every booking — your driver will meet you at arrivals, and the journey south is comfortable and scenic.
Our Sri Lanka villas are fully staffed, which is one of the great pleasures of a villa holiday on the island. A typical rental includes a private pool, daily housekeeping, a villa manager or butler, garden and pool maintenance, WiFi, and air conditioning or ceiling fans as appropriate to the setting. Most properties include a dedicated cook who prepares meals from fresh local ingredients — Sri Lankan rice and curry, Western dishes, or whatever you request. Grocery costs are charged separately and are very reasonable. Some properties include additional services such as a dedicated driver, laundry, or spa treatments. Every detail is listed on the individual villa page.
Blue whale and sperm whale watching off the South Coast — primarily from Mirissa harbour — runs from November to April, with peak sightings typically between January and March. Sri Lanka is one of the best places in the world to see blue whales, as they pass close to shore during their annual migration through the Indian Ocean. Morning boat trips depart early and return by midday, and sighting success rates during the season are high. Dolphins are frequently spotted year-round. If whale watching is a priority for your trip, booking your villa during these months ensures the best opportunity.
