About This Villa

Why We Recommend The Garden House

Some houses announce themselves; The Garden House simply waits at the end of its drive, white-walled and low-slung beneath the palms, exactly as it has since the 1870s. This was a planter’s residence, and the restoration that won it its design accolades has been careful to leave that intact — the vaulted ceilings, the deep shaded verandas, the original Sri Lankan jackwood boards worn smooth underfoot. What has been added is comfort rather than gloss, so the house feels less like a hotel than like somewhere a well-travelled friend happens to live.

Inside, four double bedrooms open off the main house, each one ensuite, each with a four-poster draped in mosquito netting and cooled by both ceiling fan and air conditioning. Upstairs a generous master suite and two further doubles catch the breeze; downstairs a fourth room looks straight out across the water to the gardens. Antique pieces sit alongside modern ones without ceremony, and the polished cement floors stay cool through the middle of the day. A fifth bedroom stands apart — a self-contained studio cottage tucked into a quiet corner of the garden, which makes it the obvious choice for grandparents, teenagers, or anyone who values their own front door.

The garden is the reason to come. An acre and a half of it wraps the house, and at its far edge a long pool sits above vivid green paddy fields, with loungers along one side and a hammock strung where the shade falls longest. Meals happen on the south-facing veranda, where the cook builds each day’s menu around whatever the morning market and the fishing boats have offered. There is a host-housekeeper, a cook and outdoor staff, all of them long-serving and unhurried, and the effect after a day or two is that the house simply runs itself around you.
