Luxury Villas in Bophut & Big Buddha

Samui's north-east corner, from the old Chinese shophouses of Fisherman's Village to the golden Big Buddha, with the airport just minutes away.

Neighbourhood Guide

Why Stay in Bophut & Big Buddha?

Bophut sits on Koh Samui’s north coast, a long, gently curving bay looking across the water to Koh Phangan. At its heart is Fisherman’s Village, a narrow strip of old wooden Chinese shophouses that once housed fishing families and now holds boutique shops, cafés and some of the island’s best restaurants. The beach in front is calm for much of the year, and the village has a relaxed, unhurried feel that many visitors prefer to the busier east coast.

East of Bophut, the coast curls round to Bangrak, better known as Big Buddha Beach. The twelve-metre golden Buddha of Wat Phra Yai sits on the small island of Koh Faan, joined to the shore by a short causeway, and is one of Samui’s best-known landmarks. A little further on, at Plai Laem, the colourful temple of Wat Plai Laem stands on a lake, with its striking eighteen-armed statue of Guan Yin. Small coves such as those around Plai Laem make up the quieter, north-eastern tip of the island.

Villas in this part of Samui range from beachfront homes along the bays to hillside properties above Bophut and Plai Laem, where the views stretch out over the Gulf of Thailand to Koh Phangan and, on clear days, Koh Tao. The hills behind the coast are green and peaceful, yet the beach, the village and a choice of restaurants are rarely more than a few minutes away by car.

Location is the great advantage here. Samui International Airport lies between Bophut and Bangrak, so most villas are only five to fifteen minutes from the terminal, and the piers at Bangrak and Bophut have regular boats to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Chaweng is around fifteen minutes south, and Choeng Mon a short drive east. It suits couples, families and groups who want a characterful village base with as little travelling as possible.

Practical Info

Planning Your Bophut & Big Buddha Stay

Best Time to Visit

Koh Samui's weather differs from Phuket's. January to August is generally the drier part of the year, with February to April the sunniest and calmest. The main rainy season arrives around October or November and runs to December, bringing heavy downpours and windier seas, though there are still plenty of bright days.

Getting There

Samui International Airport sits between Bophut and Bangrak, usually five to fifteen minutes from villas in this area. Private transfers are the easiest option for families and groups. Bophut and Bangrak piers have boats to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, and Nathon, on the west coast, is around half an hour away.

Getting Around

Fisherman's Village is best explored on foot, but most villas sit along the ring road or in the hills, so a car, a driver or taxis are the simplest way around. Ride-hailing apps work for short trips to Chaweng and Choeng Mon. Hillside roads can be steep, so allow a little extra time after heavy rain.

Where to Eat

Fisherman's Village has the widest choice, from beachfront Thai and seafood restaurants to French bistros and relaxed cafés, and the Friday evening Walking Street is full of street-food stalls. Bangrak and Plai Laem have simple local restaurants near the water. Many villas can also arrange a private chef for dinner at home.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

For much of the year, especially from January to September, the water at Bophut is calm and good for swimming. The sand is a little coarser and darker than Chaweng's, and Bangrak can be shallow at low tide. During the north-east monsoon, roughly November to January, the sea can be choppy on windy days, so the villa pool often takes over.

Fisherman's Village and its Friday evening Walking Street market are in Bophut itself. The Big Buddha at Wat Phra Yai and the lakeside temple of Wat Plai Laem are a few minutes east. Choeng Mon's sheltered bay is around ten minutes away, Chaweng is about fifteen minutes south, and boats to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao leave from the nearby piers.

Yes. The beach is generally calm, Fisherman's Village is easy and safe to stroll in the evening, and there is a good choice of relaxed restaurants. Being so close to the airport also means short transfers with tired children, and day trips to the surrounding islands are simple to arrange from the local piers.

Samui International Airport is right next door. Most villas in Bophut, Bangrak and Plai Laem are only five to fifteen minutes away by car, which makes this the most convenient part of the island for arrivals and departures. Private airport transfers can be arranged for your villa stay.

The dry months from January to August are the most popular, with February to April usually the sunniest. Villas for Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year book out early, often many months ahead, and July and August are busy with European summer holidays. The rainy season from October or November to December is quieter.
