Luxury Villas in Tangalle
Wide, empty golden beaches on Sri Lanka's deep south coast, with nesting turtles, ancient rock temples and the national parks of the south within reach.
Why Stay in Tangalle?
Tangalle lies on the far south coast, east of Matara, where the coastline opens into a series of long, wide beaches and small coves backed by coconut palms and lagoons. It is noticeably quieter and less developed than the coast around Galle and Mirissa, and many of its beaches are almost empty for much of the day. The town itself is a modest fishing town with a busy harbour and market.
The area is known for its wildlife. At Rekawa, a short drive east, sea turtles come ashore to nest on the beach at night, and a local conservation project runs guided, low-impact visits. Inland, the rock temple at Mulkirigala, with its cave shrines and reclining Buddhas cut into the rock, is one of the south’s most rewarding cultural sights, and the blowhole at Hummanaya sends plumes of spray into the air when the swell is up.
Tangalle is also a good base for safaris. Udawalawe National Park, known for its large herds of elephants, and Yala National Park, famous for leopards, sloth bears and birdlife, are both within reach for a day trip, and the lagoons and wetlands around Kalametiya and Bundala are excellent for birdwatching. Mirissa, with its whale-watching boats, is around an hour west.
Villas around Tangalle tend to be generous in scale, often set in large gardens directly above the beach or around quiet coves, and they suit couples, families and groups who value peace and space above nightlife. Swimming needs care here, as many beaches are exposed to strong currents, but the villas’ own pools and the sheltered coves make up for it.
Planning Your Tangalle Stay
Best Time to Visit
December to April is the main season, with dry, sunny weather and calmer seas. The south-west monsoon brings wind and showers from around May to September, though Tangalle, on the drier south-east of the island, often sees less rain than the west coast. October and November are changeable.
Getting There
Most guests arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport, north of Colombo, and continue by road. The drive usually takes around three and a half to four hours via the Southern Expressway. Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport is closer but has few scheduled flights.
Getting Around
Tuk-tuks are easy to find for short trips into town and between beaches. Villas are spread out along the coast and up quiet lanes, so a car with a driver is the best way to explore Rekawa, Mulkirigala, Hummanaya and the national parks.
Where to Eat
Tangalle has simple beachside restaurants serving grilled fish and Sri Lankan rice and curry, along with a handful of relaxed cafés. Choice is more limited than around Galle, so many guests dine at their villa, where a cook can prepare the day's catch and home-style Sri Lankan dishes.
