A relaxed stretch of the south coast between Galle and Ahangama, with a long sandy beach, the islands of Koggala Lake and the famous stilt fishermen.

Neighbourhood Guide

Why Stay in Habaraduwa & Koggala?

Habaraduwa and Koggala sit side by side on the south coast, a short drive east of Galle and Talpe. This is a gentler, more spacious part of the coast, where the main road runs between a long, palm-fringed beach on one side and lagoons, paddy fields and the waters of Koggala Lake on the other. It feels rural and unhurried, yet the restaurants and sights of Galle are never far away.

Koggala’s beach is one of the longest continuous stretches of sand on this part of the coast, broken by rocky outcrops and protected in places by reef. Along this shore you can still see the stilt fishermen, perched on poles set into the shallows, an image closely associated with this short section of coastline. Turtle hatcheries run by local conservation projects can be found around Habaraduwa.

Koggala Lake, just inland, is a broad lagoon dotted with small islands, including one with a Buddhist temple and another where cinnamon is grown and peeled by hand. Boat trips through the mangroves are a peaceful way to spend a morning. The folk museum in Koggala, at the birthplace of the renowned Sri Lankan writer Martin Wickramasinghe, offers a glimpse of traditional village life in the south.

Galle Fort is usually around twenty to thirty minutes away, and the surf breaks and cafés of Ahangama and Midigama are just to the east. Villas here range from beachfront homes to lakeside retreats with views over the water, and the area suits families and couples who want a beach base with plenty to explore, but without the bustle of the busier bays.

Practical Info

Planning Your Habaraduwa & Koggala Stay

Best Time to Visit

The south coast is at its best from roughly December to April, with sunny days and calmer seas. The south-west monsoon arrives around May and lasts until about September, bringing showers and rougher water, though there are often dry spells. October and November are changeable.

Getting There

Most guests arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport, north of Colombo, and continue by road via the Southern Expressway, a journey of around two and a half hours. Private transfers are the simplest option. Galle is around twenty to thirty minutes west by car.

Getting Around

The coast road links Habaraduwa and Koggala with Galle, Ahangama and Weligama, and tuk-tuks are easy to find for short trips. A car with a driver is best for day trips to Mirissa, the tea hills or national parks. The coastal railway also has a station at Koggala.

Where to Eat

There are relaxed cafés and seafood restaurants along the coast road, with more choice in nearby Ahangama, Unawatuna and Galle Fort. Fresh fish, Sri Lankan rice and curry and tropical fruit are staples. Many villas have a cook who can prepare Sri Lankan dishes and the day's catch at home.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Stilt fishing is closely associated with the coast around Koggala and neighbouring Ahangama, where fishermen sit on poles set into the shallows. It is most often seen early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Some stilts are now occupied mainly for photographs, so a small payment may be expected if you take pictures.

Boat trips on Koggala Lake take you through mangroves and to small islands, including a temple island and a cinnamon island where you can see the spice being peeled and prepared by hand. The lake is also good for birdwatching, and trips are usually most pleasant in the early morning or late afternoon.

Parts of Koggala beach are sheltered by reef and pleasant for swimming in the calm months from roughly December to April. Other sections have stronger waves and currents, and the sea is rough during the south-west monsoon from about May to September. Follow local advice, and use the villa pool when the sea is unsettled.

The drive from Bandaranaike International Airport usually takes around two and a half hours, using the expressways around Colombo and the Southern Expressway. Private transfers are the easiest option for families and groups.
