Luxury Villas in Sri Lanka’s West Coast

From Negombo's lagoon to the palm-lined beaches of Wadduwa and Kalutara, with Colombo's markets, temples and restaurants in between.

Neighbourhood Guide

Why Stay in Sri Lanka’s West Coast?

Sri Lanka’s west coast runs from Negombo, just north of the international airport, down through Colombo to the palm-fringed beaches of Wadduwa and Kalutara. It is the most accessible part of the island, with the airport, the capital and the start of the Southern Expressway all close at hand, which makes it a natural place to begin or end a longer journey, or simply to enjoy a beach stay without a long transfer.

Negombo, around twenty minutes from the airport, is an old fishing town set on a large lagoon, with a Dutch-era canal, colourful churches and a busy fish market where the day’s catch is laid out to dry on the sand. Colombo, further south, is a lively, fast-changing city of colonial buildings, Buddhist temples, markets and an increasingly good restaurant scene, with the seafront promenade at Galle Face Green at its heart.

South of the city the coast becomes greener and quieter. Wadduwa and Kalutara are known for long beaches lined with coconut palms, and for the broad Kalu Ganga river, which meets the sea at Kalutara beside a striking white temple. River and lagoon trips, cinnamon and rubber plantations inland, and the botanical gardens and water sports around Bentota further south all make easy outings.

Villas along the west coast range from beachfront homes in mature tropical gardens to riverside retreats a little inland, and they suit families, groups and anyone combining a city visit with time by the sea. The Indian Ocean here is powerful, so the best swimming is in the calmer months, and a private pool is always welcome.

Practical Info

Planning Your Sri Lanka’s West Coast Stay

Best Time to Visit

December to April is the main season on the west coast, with dry, sunny weather and calmer seas. The south-west monsoon arrives around May and lasts until about September, bringing heavy showers and rough seas, although many days still have sunny spells. October and November are changeable.

Getting There

Bandaranaike International Airport is at Katunayake, just south of Negombo and north of Colombo. Negombo is around twenty minutes away, Colombo around forty-five minutes to an hour, and Wadduwa and Kalutara around one and a half to two hours via the expressways. Private transfers are the simplest option.

Getting Around

Colombo has plenty of taxis, tuk-tuks and ride-hailing apps, though traffic can be heavy at peak times. Outside the city, a car with a driver is the most comfortable way to get around and to make day trips. The coastal railway also runs south from Colombo through Wadduwa and Kalutara.

Where to Eat

Colombo has the island's widest choice of restaurants, from street food and Sri Lankan rice and curry to refined crab and seafood dining. Negombo is known for fresh lagoon seafood, and along the beaches further south relaxed cafés serve fish and curries. Many villas can arrange a cook to prepare Sri Lankan dishes at home.
