Luxury Villas in Chaweng

Koh Samui's longest and liveliest beach, with quieter Chaweng Noi to the south and hillside villas looking out over the Gulf of Thailand.

Neighbourhood Guide

Why Stay in Chaweng?

Chaweng is Koh Samui’s best-known beach, a long sweep of fine, pale sand running for several kilometres down the island’s east coast. It is the busiest and most developed part of Samui, with the greatest choice of restaurants, shops, spas and nightlife, yet the beach itself is wide enough to feel open and relaxed for most of the day. The water is a clear turquoise in the calmer months, and the sunrises over the Gulf of Thailand are a reason to be up early.

The beach changes character along its length. North Chaweng is quieter, with a reef offshore that keeps the water shallow and sheltered. Central Chaweng is the lively stretch, backed by the main road of shops and restaurants. To the south, around a rocky point, Chaweng Noi is a smaller, calmer bay with a more peaceful feel, and beyond it the coast road climbs towards the Lad Koh viewpoint and the small cove at Crystal Bay on the way to Lamai.

Many of the finest villas sit in the hills above Chaweng and Chaweng Noi, where the land rises steeply behind the coast. From here the views take in the whole bay, Chaweng Lake behind it and the open sea beyond, and the evenings are noticeably cooler and quieter than down at sea level. The beach, restaurants and shops are usually only a few minutes away by car.

Chaweng is also one of the most convenient bases on the island. Samui International Airport is around ten to fifteen minutes north, Choeng Mon and Bophut are close by, and Lamai is a short drive south. It suits groups of friends and families with teenagers who want plenty going on nearby, as well as couples happy to retreat to a hillside villa at the end of the day.

Practical Info

Planning Your Chaweng Stay

Best Time to Visit

Koh Samui's weather differs from Phuket's. January to August is generally the drier part of the year, with February to April the sunniest and calmest. The main rainy season arrives around October or November and runs to December, when heavy showers and the north-east monsoon bring rougher seas to Chaweng and the east coast.

Getting There

Chaweng is on the east coast, usually around ten to fifteen minutes by car from Samui International Airport. Private transfers are the easiest option for families and groups. The piers at Bophut and Bangrak, with boats to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, are around fifteen minutes away, and Lamai is a short drive south.

Getting Around

The beach road in central Chaweng is easy to walk, but the hillside villas are best reached by car, and some hill roads are very steep. A car with a driver, taxis or ride-hailing apps are the simplest options. Traffic on the main road through Chaweng can be slow in the evening, so allow a little extra time.

Where to Eat

Chaweng has the widest choice of restaurants on Samui, from beachfront seafood and Thai kitchens to international dining and casual cafés, along with a lively night market. The hillside restaurants above Chaweng Noi offer sea views at sunset. Many villas can also arrange a private chef for dinner at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

For much of the year Chaweng is lovely for swimming, with soft sand and clear water, and North Chaweng is shallow and sheltered by a reef. From roughly November to January the north-east monsoon can bring bigger waves and currents to the east coast. Red flags go up on rough days, and those flags should always be respected.

Chaweng is the long main beach, busiest in the centre and quieter at the northern end. Chaweng Noi is a smaller bay just to the south, over a rocky point, with a calmer, more secluded feel. Hillside villas above both are only a few minutes' drive apart, so guests can easily enjoy the quiet side and the lively side during a stay.

Yes, particularly for families with older children. The beach is sandy and gently sloping in the calm months, there is a wide choice of restaurants and activities, and shopping is close at hand. Families who prefer quiet evenings usually choose a hillside villa above Chaweng Noi or near the northern end of the beach.

Samui International Airport is just north of Chaweng, and the drive usually takes around ten to fifteen minutes, or a little longer from Chaweng Noi and the hills, depending on traffic. Private airport transfers can be arranged for your villa stay.

The dry months from January to August are the most popular, with February to April usually the sunniest.
