Luxury Villas in Khao Lak

A quiet stretch of the Andaman coast north of Phuket, with long empty beaches, rainforest-covered hills and the Similan Islands offshore.

Neighbourhood Guide

Why Stay in Khao Lak?

Khao Lak is the peaceful side of Thailand’s Andaman coast. Around an hour’s drive north of Phuket International Airport, in Phang Nga province, it is a string of long, golden beaches backed by forested hills, with far fewer crowds than Phuket and a slower, more natural pace. The beaches face west over the Andaman Sea, so sunsets are a nightly event, and many stretches feel almost empty even in high season.

Nature is the great draw. Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park covers the hills behind the coast, with jungle trails, waterfalls and quiet coves, and Khao Sok National Park, with its limestone peaks and emerald lake, is within reach for a memorable day or overnight trip. Offshore, the Similan and Surin Islands are among the finest snorkelling and diving destinations in Thailand, with day trips running during the calmer months.

Villas here tend to be relaxed, beach-focused homes, many just a short walk from the sand. The area suits couples, families and anyone who wants space, quiet and nature rather than nightlife, while still having good restaurants, spas and a few small resort towns such as Bang Niang and Khuk Khak close by.

Practical Info

Planning Your Khao Lak Stay

Best Time to Visit

November to April is dry, sunny and calm, and the best time for beach days and island trips. May to October brings the south-west monsoon, with heavier rain and big waves on the west-facing beaches, when swimming in the sea is not advised.

Getting There

Most guests fly into Phuket International Airport and continue north by road, a drive of around an hour. Private transfers are the easiest option for families and groups.

Getting Around

Khao Lak is spread along the coast road, so a car with a driver, taxis or a hire car are the most practical ways to get around. National parks, waterfalls and the piers for island trips are all a short drive away.

Where to Eat

Bang Niang and Khuk Khak have a good choice of relaxed Thai and international restaurants, beach bars and a popular local market. Fresh Andaman seafood is the speciality, and many villas can arrange a private chef for dinner at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Khao Lak is roughly 80 kilometres north of Phuket International Airport, and the drive usually takes around an hour to an hour and a quarter. Private transfers are the simplest option and can be arranged for your villa stay.

The dry season from November to April is the best time, with calm seas, sunshine and boat trips running to the Similan Islands. From May to October the south-west monsoon brings rain and rougher seas to the Andaman coast, and the Similan Islands national park usually closes for this period.

Yes. The beaches are long and uncrowded, the pace is relaxed, and there are gentle nature trips such as waterfalls, elephant sanctuaries and boat days. As with all Andaman beaches, swimming is best in the calm dry-season months.

Khao Lak is the closest mainland base for the Similan Islands, and speedboat day trips for snorkelling and diving run during the dry season, usually from around mid-October to mid-May. Visitor numbers are limited, so it is worth booking ahead.
