Luxury Villas in Ambalangoda
A traditional coastal town on Sri Lanka's south-west coast, famous for its carved masks, with long beaches, mangrove rivers and Hikkaduwa's reefs close by.
Why Stay in Ambalangoda?
Ambalangoda is a lively, unpretentious market town on the coast between Bentota and Hikkaduwa, and it remains much more Sri Lankan than touristic. It is best known as the home of the island’s traditional mask carving. Families of carvers have worked here for generations, and the small museums and workshops in town show how the vividly painted masks are made for the old devil dances and folk dramas of the south.
The coastline either side of town is long and open, with wide stretches of golden sand, coconut palms and fishing boats pulled up on the beach. Much of it is quiet, with few buildings directly on the shore, and the sunsets over the Indian Ocean are spectacular. A short drive north, the Madu River at Balapitiya winds through mangroves and past dozens of small islands, and boat trips here are one of the most peaceful ways to see the region’s birdlife and village life.
Hikkaduwa, around fifteen minutes south, has coral reefs, snorkelling with sea turtles in the calmer months and a busier strip of cafés and surf spots. Turtle hatcheries run by local conservation projects can be visited along this stretch of coast, and Galle Fort is usually around forty-five minutes to an hour away. Many villas around Ambalangoda sit beside the beach or on the banks of rivers and lakes just inland, surrounded by palms and paddy fields.
Ambalangoda suits travellers who want space and a sense of everyday coastal life, without giving up easy access to the south coast’s sights. It is also one of the closer beach areas to Colombo’s airport, which makes it a good choice for a first or last stop on a longer journey around the island.
