Luxury Villas in Weligama

A broad, sheltered bay on Sri Lanka's south coast, known for gentle surf, a tiny island just offshore and easy trips to see whales from neighbouring Mirissa.

Neighbourhood Guide

Why Stay in Weligama?

Weligama takes its name from the Sinhala for “sandy village”, and the bay lives up to it: a wide, gently curving sweep of sand on Sri Lanka’s south coast, protected by headlands at either end. The town itself is a working fishing town rather than a resort, with a busy harbour, colourful outrigger canoes pulled up on the sand and a local market, which gives the area a lived-in, unpolished character that many visitors enjoy.

The bay is one of the best places in the country to learn to surf. Its long, soft waves break over a sandy bottom, and surf schools line the beach in the season, while more experienced surfers head to the reef and point breaks a short drive west at Midigama and Ahangama. Just offshore sits Taprobane, a small wooded island reachable on foot at low tide in calm weather, and at either end of the bay the coast breaks into quieter coves.

Mirissa, the next bay to the east, is only a few minutes away and is the main departure point for whale-watching trips. Blue whales, sperm whales and spinner dolphins are seen off this stretch of coast, with the best sightings usually between December and April. Galle Fort, with its ramparts, old churches and lanes of cafés and boutiques, is around forty minutes west along the coast road.

Villas around Weligama range from beachfront homes facing the bay to hillside retreats set among coconut palms and paddy fields a little inland, where the views stretch down to the sea. It suits active families, couples and groups of friends who want surfing, whales and the south coast’s beaches on the doorstep, with a quieter, more authentic feel than the busier resort towns.

Practical Info

Planning Your Weligama Stay

Best Time to Visit

December to April is the main season on the south coast, with dry, sunny weather, calmer seas and the best whale watching. The south-west monsoon arrives around May and lasts until about September, bringing showers and rougher seas, though it rarely rains all day. October and November are changeable.

Getting There

Most guests fly into Bandaranaike International Airport, north of Colombo, and continue by road. The drive to Weligama usually takes around two and a half to three hours via the Southern Expressway. Private transfers are the simplest option, and Galle is around forty minutes west.

Getting Around

The main coast road links Weligama with Mirissa, Ahangama and Galle, and tuk-tuks are easy to find for short trips. For day trips and longer journeys, a car with a driver is the most comfortable choice. Some hillside villas sit up narrow lanes, so a driver familiar with the area helps.

Where to Eat

Weligama and nearby Mirissa have a good spread of relaxed beach cafés, seafood grills and places serving Sri Lankan rice and curry, along with smoothie bowls and coffee for surfers. Fish comes in fresh from the harbour each morning. Many villas can arrange a private cook to prepare Sri Lankan dishes at home.
