Phuket's relaxed southern tip, where a lake meets a sheltered bay, fishing boats work the shore and the island's best sunset point is minutes away.

Neighbourhood Guide

Why Stay in Nai Harn & Rawai?

Nai Harn and Rawai make up the southern tip of Phuket, the part of the island that feels most like a place people actually live in rather than pass through. Nai Harn has one of Phuket’s loveliest beaches, a sheltered bay framed by green headlands, with a freshwater lake just behind the sand. Rawai, to the east, is a working coastline of longtail boats and seafood stalls, where the island’s fishing life carries on alongside villas, cafés and yoga studios.

Days here have an easy rhythm. Mornings at Nai Harn beach, when the water is calm and clear in the dry season. Afternoons by the villa pool. Then, as the light softens, the short drive to Promthep Cape, the headland at Phuket’s southernmost point, where the sun drops into the Andaman Sea and half the island seems to gather to watch. Between Nai Harn and the cape are smaller coves such as Ya Nui and Ao Sane, good for snorkelling when the sea is flat.

Rawai’s waterfront is the departure point for longtail and speedboat trips to the islands off the south coast, including Coral Island and the Racha islands, which are known for clear water and good snorkelling. Back on shore, the seafood market at Rawai is a local institution: you choose your fish, prawns or crab from the stalls, and the restaurants across the road cook it to order.

Villas in this area tend to be set among hills and gardens, a little inland from the beaches, which keeps them quiet and private. It suits families and longer stays especially well. The lake path at Nai Harn is a favourite for evening walks and runs, there are good international schools, gyms and Thai boxing camps nearby, and Kata, Chalong and Phuket Town are all within easy reach when you want more.

Practical Info

Planning Your Nai Harn & Rawai Stay

Best Time to Visit

November to April is the dry season, with calm, clear water at Nai Harn and the smaller coves, and the best conditions for island boat trips. From May to October the south-west monsoon brings rain showers and bigger seas, but also fewer visitors and lush green hillsides.

Getting There

Nai Harn and Rawai are at Phuket's southern tip, roughly an hour or a little more from Phuket International Airport by car. Private transfers are the simplest option for families and groups. Phuket Town is around twenty-five minutes away, and Kata is a short drive over the hill to the north.

Getting Around

Villas here are spread among the hills, so a car, a driver or taxis are the easiest way to get around. The drives between Nai Harn beach, Rawai's waterfront and Promthep Cape are all short. For island trips, boats leave from Rawai's shoreline and from Chalong pier a little further east.

Where to Eat

The Rawai seafood market is the classic experience: pick your seafood from the stalls and have it cooked at one of the restaurants opposite. Around Nai Harn there are relaxed cafés, healthy breakfast spots and casual Thai restaurants, and the wider area has a large international food scene. Many villas can also arrange a private chef.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

In the dry season, roughly November to April, Nai Harn is one of Phuket's most sheltered and pleasant swimming beaches. During the south-west monsoon, roughly May to October, waves and currents can be strong, and lifeguards post red flags on rough days. Always follow the flags. Rawai's own shoreline is better for boats and seafood than for swimming.

Beach days at Nai Harn, sunset at Promthep Cape, snorkelling at the small coves of Ya Nui and Ao Sane, boat trips from Rawai to Coral Island and the Racha islands, dinner at the Rawai seafood market, and evening walks around Nai Harn lake. The area also has a strong wellness scene, with yoga studios and Thai boxing camps nearby.

Yes. It is one of the most relaxed parts of Phuket, popular with families and with people staying several weeks or more. The pace is slower than the west-coast resort beaches, everyday shops and services are close by, and Kata and Chalong are short drives away for more choice.

The airport is at the northern end of the island, so the drive to the southern tip usually takes around an hour to an hour and a quarter, depending on traffic. Private airport transfers can be arranged for your villa stay.

November to April is the peak season, with calm seas and dry weather, and the Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year periods book out early. The green season from May to October is quieter and greener, with short tropical showers, and is a good time for longer stays.
