Koh Samui's quiet south coast, with calm bays, a traditional fishing village and longtail boats to the small islands offshore.

Neighbourhood Guide

Why Stay in Bang Kao & Thong Krut?

Bang Kao and Thong Krut lie along Koh Samui’s south coast, a gentle, unhurried stretch of the island far from the busier beaches of the east and north. The coast here is a series of quiet bays and sandy beaches backed by coconut groves and small villages, with the sea shallow and calm for much of the year. It is one of the most authentic corners of Samui, where fishing and farming still set the rhythm of daily life.

Thong Krut is a small, traditional fishing village on the south-west of this coast, and the starting point for trips to the islands just offshore. From its beach, longtail boats run across to Koh Tan, a peaceful island with quiet beaches and good snorkelling, and to tiny Koh Madsum, known for its white sand and clear water. A day spent island-hopping and swimming off these islands is one of the highlights of a stay here.

Along the coast at Bang Kao, the golden Laem Sor Pagoda stands right at the water’s edge, one of the island’s most photographed temples. Villas in this area include beachfront homes looking out over the calm southern sea and hillside properties with views across to the offshore islands. Many have large gardens and a strong sense of privacy, and the evenings are wonderfully quiet.

The south coast is also a good base for exploring. Lamai and Hua Thanon are around fifteen to twenty minutes east, the Na Muang waterfalls are a short drive inland, and Taling Ngam’s sunset coast is around fifteen minutes west. Samui International Airport is usually around forty-five minutes to an hour away. It suits families, couples and anyone seeking calm water and a slower pace.

Practical Info

Planning Your Bang Kao & Thong Krut Stay

Best Time to Visit

Koh Samui's weather differs from Phuket's. January to August is generally the drier part of the year, with February to April the sunniest and calmest. The main rainy season arrives around October or November and runs to December, bringing heavy showers, though the south coast is sheltered from the north-east monsoon and its sea usually stays calmer.

Getting There

Bang Kao and Thong Krut are on the south coast, usually around forty-five minutes to an hour by car from Samui International Airport. Private transfers are the easiest option for families and groups. Nathon pier and the car ferry pier at Thong Yang, both with boats to the mainland, are around twenty to thirty minutes away.

Getting Around

The south coast is rural and spread out, so a car or a driver is the most practical way around. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are available but can take a while to arrive. The ring road runs a little inland, with quiet side roads leading down to the beaches, the pagoda and the boats at Thong Krut.

Where to Eat

Thong Krut has simple seafood restaurants by the water, serving the day's catch from the local boats, and there are relaxed Thai kitchens along the coast at Bang Kao. Lamai, around twenty minutes east, offers a much wider choice of restaurants. Many villas can also arrange a private chef for dinner at home.

The beaches are shallow, though, and at low tide the water can recede a long way, so swimming is best around high tide. The islands of Koh Tan and Koh Madsum offer clearer water and good snorkelling.

Longtail boats run from the beach at Thong Krut to both islands, and the crossing takes only a short time in calm weather. Many guests spend a day on the islands swimming, snorkelling and relaxing on the beaches. Your villa can usually help arrange a private boat for the day.
