A long, peaceful beach on Koh Samui's north coast, with calm water, a relaxed village feel and views across the sea to Koh Phangan.

Neighbourhood Guide

Why Stay in Mae Nam?

Mae Nam lies on Koh Samui’s north coast, a long, gently curving beach of golden sand lined with coconut palms. It is one of the island’s quieter and more traditional areas, where the pace is slow and village life carries on much as it always has. The beach is rarely busy, the water is calm for much of the year, and the view across the sea is filled by the green hills of Koh Phangan.

Behind the beach, Mae Nam village has a strong local character, with markets, Thai restaurants and a colourful Chinese temple. On Thursday evenings the Walking Street brings the village to life, with street food, crafts and local stalls. Nearby, the temple of Wat Na Phra Larn and its pagoda are worth a visit, and the small pier at Mae Nam has boats across to Koh Phangan.

Villas in Mae Nam include beachfront homes set among the palms and hillside properties in the green hills inland, where the views open out over the coastline and the sea. The beachfront villas offer the simple pleasure of stepping straight from the garden onto quiet sand, while those in the hills are cooler and more secluded.

Mae Nam is also well placed for exploring. Fisherman’s Village in Bophut is around ten minutes east, Samui International Airport is usually fifteen to twenty-five minutes away, and Chaweng is around half an hour by car. It suits families, couples and longer stays, and anyone who wants a calm, authentic base with the rest of the island within easy reach.

Practical Info

Planning Your Mae Nam Stay

Best Time to Visit

Koh Samui's weather differs from Phuket's. January to August is generally the drier part of the year, with February to April the sunniest and calmest. The main rainy season arrives around October or November and runs to December, bringing heavy showers and windier conditions on the north coast, though there are still sunny spells.

Getting There

Mae Nam is on the north coast, usually around fifteen to twenty-five minutes by car from Samui International Airport. Private transfers are the easiest option for families and groups. Mae Nam pier has boats to Koh Phangan, and Nathon, the island's main ferry port to the mainland, is around twenty minutes away.

Getting Around

The village and beach roads are pleasant to walk, but most villas are spread along the coast or in the hills, so a car, a driver or taxis are the simplest way around. Ride-hailing apps work for short trips to Bophut and Bang Po. The ring road runs through Mae Nam and is easy to drive.

Where to Eat

Mae Nam has a good mix of relaxed beachfront restaurants, Thai kitchens and cafés, and the Thursday evening Walking Street is full of street-food stalls. Fisherman's Village in Bophut, ten minutes east, has a much wider choice for an evening out. Many villas can also arrange a private chef for dinner at home.

Yes. For much of the year Mae Nam's water is calm and good for swimming, and the beach slopes more steeply than some on the north coast, so there is usually enough depth even at low tide. During the north-east monsoon, roughly November to January, the sea can become windier and choppier.

Mae Nam's own village has a Thursday evening Walking Street, local markets, a Chinese temple and Wat Na Phra Larn. Bang Po's quiet reef is around ten minutes west, Fisherman's Village in Bophut is around ten minutes east, and boats to Koh Phangan leave from the Mae Nam pier.

Yes. The beach is long, quiet and generally calm, the village is relaxed and friendly, and there are easy family restaurants close by. Being on the north coast also means Bophut, the airport and the island's main sights are all within a short drive.

Samui International Airport is east of Mae Nam, and the drive usually takes around fifteen to twenty-five minutes, depending on traffic and where your villa is. Private airport transfers can be arranged for your villa stay.

The dry months from January to August are the most popular, with February to April usually the sunniest.
