Villa Mayurana

Villa Mayurana sits on a private cinnamon estate just outside Ahangama, on Sri Lanka’s south coast, looking out over green hills towards Koggala Lake. It is a gracious colonial-style home of white columns, tiled roofs and wide verandas, set among landscaped gardens with ponds and fountains, and it feels wonderfully removed from the coast road while Koggala and Ahangama beaches are only a short drive away. With four suites for up to eight guests, it suits couples travelling together, families and small groups of friends who want quiet, space and attentive service.

The grounds are the heart of the stay. A twenty-metre infinity pool runs along the lawn with a row of loungers and red parasols, its edge falling away to views of the surrounding plantations, and a second pool sits closer to the house among frangipani trees. There is a swinging bench in the garden, a lawn made for morning yoga, and a covered veranda that wraps around the villa with antique planters’ chairs, sitting areas and an alfresco dining table for meals outdoors.

Inside, separate living and dining rooms are furnished with leather sofas, handmade rugs and antique cabinets, and the formal dining room has a ten-seat dark wood table with views over the garden and pool. Each of the four suites has an antique four-poster king bed, air conditioning, a TV and an en-suite bathroom with a rain shower, decorated with traditional art and handwoven textiles. Breakfast is included, housekeeping, pool and garden care and security are part of the stay, and there is a private spa room and a fully equipped gym.
