Samui Y Villa sits high on the hillside above Bophut, and the view is what you will remember: green slopes rolling down to the sea, a scatter of islands on the horizon and a sky that changes colour through the day. The house is built for living outdoors, with broad shaded terraces on several levels, tropical planting and bright bougainvillea along the garden steps, and the hilltop breeze keeps it all feeling fresh.

The infinity pool is the star, its edge lined up with the coastline and its deck set with sun loungers and big white umbrellas. Behind it, a covered terrace is laid out with deep cushioned sofas facing the water, and a hanging rattan chair and a sunbed corner make the most of the outlook. Meals can move with the light, from a shaded dining terrace to an open-air table by the pool, while indoors a light-filled living room with leather sofas and satellite television opens wide to the scenery. A barbecue sets up easy evenings at home.

Three bedrooms suit a family or a group of friends: two king rooms, one with a four-poster bed, and a twin room that is ideal for children, each with air conditioning and its own bathroom with a walk-in shower. Several rooms look out through full-height glass to the sea. Fisherman’s Village, with its beach, boutiques and restaurants, is a short drive down the hill, and the Big Buddha temple is close by.
