Villa Yuko

A private door off the lane opens straight onto water. Villa Yuko turns its back on the street and runs a narrow lap pool the full length of its side courtyard, pale stone coping along one edge and a daybed piled with green-and-white striped bolsters on the other. Banana and travellers palms are packed tight against the boundary wall, two thatched parasols lean over the deck, and the whole ground floor is glazed to it, so the house reads as a single long room with the pool as its fourth wall. Pererenan village and central Canggu are each an easy walk in opposite directions, and the sand is a short stroll from the end of the lane.

Inside, the volume climbs two storeys. A pale sectional sits sunken a step below floor level around a round timber table on a jute rug, facing a television mounted on a panel of warm timber, and above it a flight of open timber treads, carried on one black stringer, cuts across the glass. The kitchen is the room’s quiet showpiece, all timber joinery and a curved white stone island with woven rattan bar stools, a gas hob and plaster niches holding glass storage jars; the dining table for six sits between the two under fringed rattan pendants hung at deliberately staggered heights. Cooking here is genuinely pleasant rather than merely possible.

Both bedrooms take a king. The first sets a timber-slab headboard against a picture window filled with banana and heliconia leaves, rattan pendants either side and a ceiling fan turning slowly overhead; the second sits under exposed rafters and alang-alang thatch with a carved mandala mirror above the bed. Each has its own bathroom, and each of those has a freestanding oval tub, one raised on a stone plinth beneath a skylight and one set beside a planted window, with twin rain showers against walls of monochrome patterned tile. Outside, a second lounge shelters under its own thatched roof beside the pool, low sofa, round table, sheer white curtains lifting whenever the afternoon breeze arrives.

Four guests, two staff-serviced bedrooms, and a team that cleans daily and keeps someone on hand at any hour to let you in. Three things are worth arranging before you arrive: a private cook, because that curved stone island deserves better than toast; an in-villa massage, which sets up neatly under the thatched roof beside the pool; and a scooter, since the beach is walkable but the rest of the coast is not. Laundry runs through the concierge rather than a machine in the house, and breakfast, when you want it, comes to the dining table on request rather than folded into the rate.

Two bedrooms here get the run of a house built to a far grander plan: two storeys of glass above one long strip of water, with very little standing between you and a swim. Walk out for coffee, walk back for the pool, and leave the rest to the concierge.
