Few places on earth pack as much good eating into a few square kilometres as Canggu. This is the home of the Bali brunch, the açaí bowl and the natural-wine bar — but also of excellent Indonesian warungs and serious dinner spots. Here’s our Canggu restaurant guide, sorted by the meal you’re after.

Breakfast & Brunch

Canggu invented the genre. Crate is the budget-friendly institution with the legendary queue, Milk & Madu does the easy all-day thing that families keep coming back to, and The Shady Shack serves its plant-based classics beside an actual rice paddy. Dozens of café-roasters along Batu Bolong do smashed avo, smoothie bowls and flat whites to a very high standard. Come hungry and come early — the best tables fill by 9am.

Lunch by the Beach

The beach clubs do double duty as lunch spots — La Brisa for driftwood-chic Mediterranean, The Lawn for poolside grazing at sunset. Keep It Local

The warungs keep Canggu honest, and skipping them is the classic first-timer mistake. Warung Varuna feeds the surf crowd generous nasi campur at local prices, Warung Bu Mi does the same for Balinese home cooking, and the roadside sate carts that appear after dark serve some of the best two-dollar dinners on the island. Point, smile, and eat well.

Dinner

Canggu’s dinner scene has grown up fast. Mason and Uma lead the modern fine-dining pack, Fishbone Local turns the morning’s catch into the neighbourhood’s best seafood, and Ji Terrace by the Sea — up at Batu Bolong’s antique-filled Tugu hotel — pairs Japanese plates with the prettiest sunset dining room in town. Meanwhile the Pererenan frontier just over the river now rivals the centre for natural-wine bars and inventive small plates.

Coffee & Sweet Things

Canggu takes its coffee as seriously as its surf — local roasters pull single-origin Indonesian beans all along Batu Bolong and Berawa, and you’re never more than a hundred metres from a serious flat white. Afterwards, the gelato counters and dessert bars around Jalan Pantai Berawa handle the evening passeggiata crowd. It’s a hard place to have a bad coffee and a harder one to skip dessert.

Where to Stay for the Food

Canggu’s spread out, so staying central saves you scooter time between meals. A villa in Berawa — like Air Villa or Akar — puts the brunch spots and beach clubs within walking distance, while quieter Pererenan and Umalas trade a few minutes’ ride for calm.
