Things to Do in Canggu — The Complete Guide
Canggu is what happens when a surf village gets discovered by the world’s creatives and refuses to stop being a village about it. Rice paddies still run between the gyms and galleries; ceremonies still close the lanes. It’s our most-booked corner of Bali — here’s how guests staying in our Canggu villas actually fill a week.
Learn to Surf at Batu Bolong
Batu Bolong’s long, forgiving wave is one of the world’s great learner breaks. Board rental is everywhere, instructors are excellent and cheap, and the post-surf smoothie is mandatory. Experienced surfers head to Echo Beach’s punchier reef or make the dawn run to Medewi’s endless left. Half our guests book a villa near the beach for exactly this routine.
Eat Your Way Down the Lanes
Canggu’s café density is unmatched in Southeast Asia — smoothie bowls and specialty coffee for breakfast, woodfired everything for dinner, and a warung scene that survived the boom (the nasi campur institutions on the back lanes remain the best lunch on the island for a few dollars). Pererenan, one village west, is the current frontier for serious kitchens.
Beach Club Afternoons
From La Brisa’s driftwood-bohemian to Finns’ all-day pool party, Canggu’s beach clubs are destinations in themselves. The move: arrive at 3pm, claim a daybed, swim until the sky goes pink, stay for the DJ. Sundays are peak scene; Tuesdays are blissfully calm.
Tanah Lot at Golden Hour
Bali’s most photographed temple sits on its wave-battered rock twenty minutes west of Canggu — closer than from anywhere else tourists stay. Skip the midday coaches: go for the last hour of light, then dine in quiet Seseh or Pererenan on the way home. Better yet, stay out west in our Seseh & Tanah Lot villas and have the temple as your local.
Sweat It Out
Canggu may be the easiest place on earth to maintain a fitness habit on holiday: world-class gyms, MMA and Muay Thai academies, reformer pilates, and more yoga shalas than temples. Most do drop-in classes; mornings before the heat are best.
Day Trips That Work from Canggu
Ubud’s rice terraces and Monkey Forest are an hour northeast (leave by 7.30am, beat the buses — our Ubud guide has the full plan). The Bukit’s cliffs and Uluwatu Temple are an hour south. And Seminyak’s shopping is fifteen minutes away when you need it — see our Seminyak guide.
Where to Stay in the Middle of It
Canggu is our deepest villa market — over two hundred properties from surf shacks upgraded into design statements to full family compounds. Start with the Canggu collection, narrow by size (three-bedroom and four-bedroom are the sweet spots for groups), or read the Ultimate Guide to Canggu Villas for the neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood breakdown. The Aurum and Villa Siang show the range.
