Things to Do in Uluwatu — Cliffs, Temples & Surf

By Luxury Dream EscapesJune 17, 20263 min read

Uluwatu earns its reputation in the first ten minutes: you crest the Bukit Peninsula’s spine, the land falls away, and the Indian Ocean opens up two hundred feet below a temple that’s been balanced on the cliff edge for a thousand years. Then the question becomes what to do with the rest of the week. Plenty, it turns out — here’s our field-tested list.

Uluwatu Temple and the Kecak Fire Dance

Pura Luhur Uluwatu is one of Bali’s six holiest temples, and its clifftop setting is unmatched on the island. Go an hour before sunset, walk the cliff path (guard your sunglasses — the macaques are professional thieves), then take a seat in the amphitheatre for the kecak: seventy bare-chested men chanting the Ramayana as the sun drops into the sea behind them. Touristy? Completely. Worth it? Every single time.

The Beaches: Padang Padang, Bingin, Thomas and Beyond

The Bukit’s beaches hide at the bottom of cliff stairs, which is exactly what keeps them special. Padang Padang is the famous cove (arrive before 9am in high season); Bingin is the connoisseur’s choice, with warungs grilling mahi-mahi at the foot of the stairs; Thomas Beach stays quiet even in July; and Nyang Nyang’s vast empty sands reward the steep descent. Base yourself nearby — our Bukit villa collection covers every one of these — and you can beach-hop all week.

Watch World-Class Surf (or Paddle Out Yourself)

Uluwatu’s wave is one of surfing’s cathedrals, and the clifftop warungs above the break serve cold Bintang with front-row views of the lineup. Beginners shouldn’t paddle out here — but watching the pros thread the barrel below Single Fin on a big swell is a spectator sport in its own right. Surfers planning a dedicated trip should read up on the peninsula’s breaks before choosing where to stay.

Sunset at the Cliff Bars

The Bukit invented the Bali cliff bar and still does it best — from barefoot-casual spots above Bingin to the polished day clubs near the temple, there’s a ledge for every budget. The formula is constant: west-facing cliff, cold drinks, and the nightly show. Many guests do a different one each evening.

Sundays on the Sand: Beach Clubs Done Differently

Unlike Seminyak’s pool scenes, the Bukit’s beach clubs sit at the bottom of the cliffs on real sand — descending by inclinator to a private cove for a day of snorkelling, sand and seafood is a Bukit signature. Book ahead in dry season; weekdays are calmer.

Day Trips: GWK and Jimbaran’s Fish Grills

The Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue — taller than the Statue of Liberty — is twenty minutes away and startling up close. Combine it with an evening at Jimbaran Bay, where you choose your fish from ice displays and eat it grilled over coconut husks with your feet in the sand.

Where to Stay for All This

Uluwatu rewards staying on the peninsula rather than day-tripping from Seminyak — the magic hours are dawn and dusk, when day visitors are stuck in traffic. Couples should start with our one-bedroom Bukit villas (cliff views, plunge pools), families with the three-bedroom collection — or read our full guide to Uluwatu’s neighbourhoods to pick your corner. The Luminous Villa and Villa Kusa are reliable favourites.
