The Best Beaches in Canggu
Canggu’s beaches confuse first-timers. They’re black volcanic sand, not white; the ocean is a surf break, not a swimming pool; and the best of them are reached down lanes that look like they lead nowhere. Understand them on their own terms, though, and you’ll see why half the world’s surf-and-laptop crowd refuses to leave. Here’s the coastline, beach by beach, from someone who’s walked all of it.
Batu Bolong — The Heart of It
If Canggu has a main beach, this is it: a forgiving longboard wave, a row of beanbag bars facing the sunset, and the constant low theatre of dogs, surfers and smoothie bowls. The lane behind it is Canggu’s busiest strip. Stay close — Villa Pantai and Villa Taman are both walking distance — and you can do the whole holiday barefoot.
Echo Beach — Surf Theatre and Grilled Fish
Five minutes north, Echo Beach (Batu Mejan) is where you watch proper surfing while eating corn grilled over coconut husks. The reef break here is sharper and the crowd more local. The sunset fish barbecues remain one of Canggu’s best-value dinners.
Berawa — The Glossy End
Berawa’s wide grey sand fronts the area’s most polished beach clubs — Finns and Atlas anchor a strip where daybeds book out by mid-morning in high season. Family villas cluster thickly here; Villa Moana and Villa Paradiso are two of our most-rebooked, and our four-bedroom Canggu collection is full of Berawa addresses.
Pererenan — The Insider’s Choice
One river west of Echo Beach, Pererenan has become the address Canggu regulars quietly prefer: the same black-sand drama, a fraction of the traffic, and a restaurant scene that’s gone from zero to outstanding in five years. Villa Siang and Casa Luca put you in the middle of it.
Seseh and Nyanyi — Where the Crowds End
Keep driving west and the lanes turn to rice fields, the beaches empty out, and Tanah Lot temple appears on its rock offshore. Seseh is barely a village — a temple, a few warungs, kilometres of windswept sand. It’s our pick for guests who want Canggu’s coast without Canggu’s pace; see White Rabbit or browse the Seseh & Tanah Lot collection.
Swimming, Tides and Black Sand: Know Before You Go
Canggu’s ocean demands respect — currents are real, and swimming is best done close to the flagged sections at Batu Bolong or in your villa pool. The black sand gets genuinely hot by midday (sandals after 11am) and turns silver-pewter at sunset, which is when the whole coast is at its best. Beach clubs solve the swimming question with pools; so does staying somewhere from our three-bedroom Canggu villa collection, where the pool is yours alone.
