Bali is the “island of a thousand temples” — in truth, there are tens of thousands. Every village, every rice field, every family compound has its shrine. But a handful stand out for their setting, scale and atmosphere. These are the best temples in Bali to build a trip around, from sea cliffs to volcanic lakes.

Uluwatu Temple — The Cliff Temple

Tanah Lot — The Postcard

Tirta Empul — The Holy Spring

Near Ubud, Tirta Empul is a water temple where Balinese Hindus have performed melukat purification rituals for a thousand years, bathing in spring-fed pools. Visitors can take part respectfully — an experience, not just a photo stop.

Besakih — The Mother Temple

On the slopes of sacred Mount Agung, Besakih is the largest and holiest temple complex on the island — a sprawling series of terraces climbing the volcano. The scale and the mountain backdrop are the draw; go early to beat the heat and the tour buses.

Ulun Danu Beratan — The Lake Temple

In the cool central highlands, this temple appears to float on the still water of Lake Beratan, often wreathed in morning mist. It’s the serene counterpoint to the coastal drama of Uluwatu and Tanah Lot.

Visiting Respectfully

A sarong and sash are required at every temple (usually available to borrow), shoulders should be covered, and areas reserved for worshippers are clearly marked.
