Pura Tanah Lot (“temple of the land in the sea”) is one of Bali’s most important sea temples, built to honour the guardian spirits of the ocean. At low tide you can walk across the rocks to its base; at high tide it sits dramatically offshore, completely surrounded by water. Non-worshippers can’t climb up to the temple itself, but the clifftop paths and viewpoints along the shore are where everyone comes anyway — for the silhouette against the sunset.

Timing Is Everything

Tanah Lot is a sunset destination, which means it’s busiest from late afternoon. Two tactics help: arrive an hour or two before sunset to walk the headland in calmer light and secure a good spot, or visit in the morning when the complex is almost empty and the temple still photogenic. Check the tide — low tide lets you reach the base; high tide gives you the classic floating-temple shot.

Don’t Miss the Sister Temple

A short clifftop walk away sits Pura Batu Bolong, a smaller temple perched on a natural rock archway over the surf. It’s quieter, just as photogenic, and the path between the two is the prettiest part of the visit.
