Uluwatu Temple & the Kecak Dance — A Sunset Guide

By Luxury Dream EscapesJuly 20, 20262 min read

Perched on a sheer cliff a hundred metres above the Indian Ocean, Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu) is the most spectacularly sited of Bali’s sea temples — and at sunset, when the fire-lit Kecak dance begins, it’s one of the island’s unmissable experiences. Here’s everything you need to plan the perfect evening.

The Temple

Uluwatu is one of Bali’s six sad kahyangan — the key spiritual pillars protecting the island. The cliff-edge setting is the draw: a slim stone temple silhouetted against the ocean, with a paved path running along the headland in both directions. You don’t enter the inner sanctum (it’s reserved for worshippers), but the clifftop walk and the views are the real reward. A sarong is required and provided at the entrance.

The Kecak Fire Dance

Every evening at sunset, an open-air amphitheatre beside the temple hosts the Kecak — a hypnotic performance where a circle of around 70 men chant “cak-cak-cak” in interlocking rhythm while dancers tell the Ramayana epic around a central fire. There are no instruments; the chant is the music. As the sun drops into the ocean behind the stage, it’s genuinely spine-tingling. Arrive 45 minutes early — tickets sell out and the good seats go fast.

Watch the Monkeys

The temple’s resident macaques are notorious opportunists with a talent for snatching sunglasses, hats and phones — then trading them back for fruit. Keep everything zipped away and don’t engage. It’s part of Uluwatu’s character, but a stolen passport is no one’s idea of a souvenir.

Make a Day of the Bukit

Uluwatu sits at the tip of the Bukit peninsula, Bali’s clifftop south — so build a full day around it. Spend the afternoon at a beach club or surf break (our things to do in Uluwatu guide has the shortlist), eat early (see the best restaurants in Uluwatu), then catch the Kecak at golden hour. Staying nearby makes the timing effortless — a clifftop villa like Bingin Beach Hideaway keeps you minutes from the temple, and our where to stay in Uluwatu guide covers your options.

When to Go

Sunset year-round, but the dry season (April–October) delivers the clearest skies for that ocean backdrop — see our best time to visit Bali guide.
