Villa Baan Arun
Why We Recommend Villa Baan Arun
Baan Arun translates as House of the Dawn, and this four-bedroom pool villa on Koh Samui’s northeast coast lives up to the name. Set on an elevated plot in Bangrak, it overlooks Cheongmon Bay and the coconut plantations that carpet the hillside below, with views stretching across the Gulf of Thailand towards Koh Phangan. The northeast orientation means you wake to some of the island’s finest sunrises, the sky turning from amber to pink above the water while the rest of Samui is still in shadow. At $200 to $450 per night for four bedrooms, a 15-metre infinity pool, and airport transfers included, it represents outstanding value for a private villa with this calibre of outlook.
The villa is arranged across two buildings connected by landscaped tropical gardens thick with bougainvillea and frangipani. The main building houses an open-plan living and dining area with high ceilings, a fully equipped Western-style kitchen with breakfast bar seating for four, and a formal dining table for eight. Bi-fold doors open directly onto the sandstone pool terrace, where a kidney-shaped infinity pool appears to spill over the edge towards the bay. A natural rock waterfall feeds the pool from the rear, and a covered sala with built-in bar provides a shaded spot for afternoon drinks or evening cocktails as the light fades. Beyond the pool, a gas barbecue and outdoor dining terrace seat another eight guests alfresco.
Two bedrooms in the main building open at pool level, while a separate pavilion houses the master suite on the upper floor and a twin bedroom below with its own pool-terrace access. The master is the standout: a king-size bed faces the bay through floor-to-ceiling glass, sliding doors open onto a private balcony, and the ensuite bathroom features dual vanities, a soaking tub, and an outdoor rain shower with views over the treetops. Three of the four bedrooms have private ensuite bathrooms; two guest bedrooms share a generous interconnecting bathroom with a walk-in shower. Every room is air-conditioned and fitted with ceiling fans, blackout curtains, and quality bed linen.
Bangrak is one of Samui’s most convenient locations. The airport is roughly 12 minutes away, and your transfer is included in the rate. Fisherman’s Village in Bophut, with its Friday night walking street, seafood restaurants, and boutique shops, is about 10 minutes by car. Chaweng, the island’s main commercial strip and nightlife hub, is equally close in the opposite direction, and Central Festival mall sits midway between the two. A resident couple, Khun Mee and Khun Deng, live discreetly on the grounds and look after the property, while a multilingual guest manager coordinates restaurant bookings, island tours, and day-to-day requests.
Villa Baan Arun is one of those rare Koh Samui properties where the setting genuinely exceeds the price point. The infinity pool and bay panorama would not look out of place at a villa charging two or three times the rate, yet the included transfers, resident staff, and a location that puts you within easy reach of everything on the north coast make it a practical choice as well as a beautiful one. For families or groups of friends who want a proper Thai villa holiday without the resort price tag, it is very hard to beat.
