Nusa Lembongan — The Complete Guide
Just a 30-minute boat ride from the mainland, Nusa Lembongan is the Bali of twenty years ago — no traffic, no high-rises, just turquoise water, seaweed farms and a handful of cliff-top warungs. It’s the island’s most rewarding day trip, and an easy overnight if you want to slow right down. Here’s how to do it well.
Getting There
Fast boats run from Sanur throughout the morning, taking around 30 minutes. If you’re basing yourself on Bali’s calm east coast — and a villa like Villa Casis or Villa Gils in Sanur puts you minutes from the jetty — Lembongan is the perfect spontaneous escape. Buy a return ticket and travel light; the boats beach directly onto the sand.
What to Do on Nusa Lembongan
The island is small enough to circle in a day by scooter. Don’t miss:
- Devil’s Tear — a dramatic blowhole where the swell explodes against black rock, best at high tide.
- Dream Beach & Sandy Bay — postcard sand with a clifftop bar above.
- The Yellow Bridge to neighbouring Nusa Ceningan, and the famous Blue Lagoon cliff jump.
- Snorkelling at Mangrove Point — clear water, healthy coral and, in season, manta rays nearby.
Where to Eat
Lembongan does sunset better than almost anywhere in Bali. The warungs along the Jungut Batu and Mushroom Bay coast serve fresh grilled fish and cold Bintangs with the volcano of Mount Agung floating on the horizon. Come for the late afternoon and stay for the colour.
Day Trip or Overnight?
A day trip is enough to see the highlights, but staying over lets you catch the island at its quietest — after the day-trippers leave and before they arrive. Either way, we’d suggest using a villa on the Sanur side as your base, since it’s the natural launch point. Read our guide to Sanur, Bali’s calm east coast for where to stay.
When to Go
The crossing is smoothest and the water clearest in the dry season (April to October). Manta season peaks mid-year, and the seas can be choppier in the wet months — see our full guide to the best time to visit Bali for the month-by-month picture. While you’re island-hopping, pair Lembongan with its wilder neighbour in our things to do in Nusa Dua guide for a complete east-coast itinerary.
