Sanur — Bali’s Calm East Coast
Sanur has spent fifty years being unfashionable, and it’s the best thing that ever happened to the place. While the west coast reinvented itself every five years, Bali’s original beach resort kept its paved seafront promenade, its reef-calmed swimming water and its unhurried village manners. The result is the island’s most quietly liveable coast — and a brilliant villa base for the right kind of traveller.
Who Sanur Is For
Families with young children (the swimming is the safest on mainland Bali), travellers who like walking and cycling more than scooters, anyone catching early boats to Nusa Penida or Lembongan, and returnees who’ve done the west coast and want calm. Who it isn’t for: nightlife seekers and surf-or-die types — though even surfers find winter magic on Sanur’s reefs, as our Bali surf guide explains.
The Beachfront Promenade
Sanur’s signature is its five-kilometre paved path running the entire beachfront — sunrise joggers, cyclists, kids on training wheels, old men playing chess under the trees. Rent bikes and ride it end to end, stopping at beach warungs as the mood takes. Sunrise here (Sanur faces east, rare for Bali’s resorts) is the island’s gentlest daily spectacle.
Swim, Sail, Snorkel
The offshore reef turns Sanur’s sea into a vast, calm lagoon — proper swimming at most tides, jukung sailboats for hire along the sand, and paddleboarding glassy mornings. Day boats run to Nusa Lembongan’s mangroves and Nusa Penida’s manta rays from the beach itself; you’re closer to Bali’s best snorkelling than anywhere on the west coast.
Old Bali, Still Here
Sanur village rewards wandering: the Le Mayeur Museum (home of the Belgian painter who married a Legong dancer and never left), morning markets on Jalan Pasar, and warungs that have served the same babi guling for generations. Ubud’s rice terraces are forty-five minutes inland — closer than from Canggu — making Sanur a smart two-centre base.
The Villas: Space the West Coast Forgot
Sanur’s villa stock is small but generous — old-money plots with real gardens. Villa Casis is the standout: six bedrooms, a tropical compound of the kind they genuinely don’t build anymore, walking distance to the beach path. Villa Gils down the coast in Candidasa extends the east-coast logic with a 25-metre beachfront lap pool, and Casa De Gracia covers smaller parties. Browse the full Sanur & Ketewel collection.
Sanur or Seminyak? Be Honest With Yourself
It’s the question we field weekly. Choose Seminyak for restaurants, shopping and scene (our Seminyak guide makes the case); choose Sanur for swimming, cycling and sleep. With kids under eight, we’d choose Sanur nine times out of ten — pair it with our family villa guide for the full playbook.
Tempted by the calm side? Tell us your dates — Sanur’s best villas are few and book early, and we know which weeks are quiet.
