The Hermitage

The Hermitage sits on the forested edge of the Victoria Reservoir near Kandy, set within six acres of tropical woodland that is home to more than forty species of birds. It is a remarkable multi-level house of soaring timber roofs, stone and tall glass, filled with antiques and hand-picked art and open to the breezes coming off the water. With just three suites for up to six guests, it is a peaceful, grown-up retreat for couples, small families and friends who want nature, quiet and a comfortable base for exploring Kandy and the hill country.

The infinity pool looks straight out over the reservoir and the hills beyond, with a timber deck for sunbathing and alfresco dining facing the lake. Paths and a raised walkway lead through the trees to shaded corners, a small stone shrine and spots right by the water, where massages can be arranged in the open air. At dusk, the house glows among the trees and the lake turns silver below.

Inside, three separate living areas, a library and a dining room spread across the levels, furnished with leather sofas, teak daybeds and handmade rugs, so there is always a quiet spot to read. The Kundalini, Samatha and Vipassana suites each have a canopied king-size bed, teak cabinets and an en-suite bathroom with a bathtub positioned for the view. There is a private spa, breakfast is included, and the staff look after housekeeping, the garden and pool, with round-the-clock security.
