About This Villa

Why We Recommend Villa Ayo 1

Gang Kunyit is a village lane off Jalan Pantai Seseh, close enough to the coast that the air carries salt, and Villa Ayo 1 sits along it behind a plain wall. The plot is arranged lengthways: a lap pool in green mosaic runs the whole side of the house, pale stone paving on one edge and a bank of heliconia, banana and coconut palms on the other, with a raised plaster platform at the far end broad enough to lie on. Above the glazing the gable is clad in narrow copper-toned timber louvres. Beyond the boundary the rice fields begin, and Seseh Beach is a short walk down the lane.

Inside, the whole ground floor is one double-height room. A curved bench sofa is built into the plaster, dressed in blush cushions around a chunky teak table, and the wall behind it is cut into arched niches holding ceramics, woven discs and small carvings. A timber stair on a black steel stringer climbs to the mezzanine walkway above. The kitchen occupies the far end with plaster counters, open shelving and copper-toned woven pendants over an oval teak table and six curved chairs. There is no television here; instead a projector throws a film onto the wall when the evening asks for one, and the glazing slides away on two sides.

The ground-floor bedroom opens straight onto the garden through sliding glass, with woven-panel wardrobe doors, a cane pendant and a tall timber-framed mirror. Its en-suite is the finer of the two: a long plaster vanity with twin basins under a broad timber mirror, and a freestanding stone tub set against the window with palms on the other side of the glass, plus a shower behind a glazed screen looking into a planted lightwell. The second bedroom sits up on the mezzanine, a quieter room with a ceiling fan, a timber desk and a wide window over the paddies. A second bathroom with its own freestanding tub serves it, and a guest washroom keeps a teal ceramic trough basin under a round palm-fibre mirror.

Outside, a bamboo canopy shades a teak sofa and armchairs behind gauze curtains, which is the coolest corner of the plot by mid-afternoon, and an outdoor shower deals with the sand. Housekeeping comes daily, a welcome drink is waiting on arrival, and towels, Wi-Fi, a safe and the concierge team are part of the stay, while breakfast, a private cook, a car or a scooter, massage, a nanny and a pool fence all arrive on request. Seseh, Cemagi and Pererenan beaches are within easy reach, Tanah Lot is a short drive up the coast, and the airport is about an hour away.

Villa Ayo 1 gets the arithmetic right for four: two king rooms that feel equal, one long stretch of water to fall into, and rice fields where the noise of Canggu would otherwise be. Seseh is still quiet, and the walk down to the sand takes about as long as it takes to find your sunglasses.
