Villa Maido

A spiral staircase of warm timber curls up through the middle of Villa Maido, wrapped around an indoor garden that climbs towards a double-height ceiling. It sets the tone for a five-bedroom home in Umalas that pairs clean modern lines with handcrafted detail: rattan wardrobes, patterned wallpapers, natural stone bathrooms and art deco touches throughout.

Downstairs everything is open and bright. A vast curved sofa fills the living room, a table for twelve sits beneath a row of pendant lights, and the kitchen island has stools for casual breakfasts. Sliding glass doors lead out to a covered terrace with a second long dining table and a barbecue, beside a slim twelve-and-a-half-metre pool lined with daybeds and beanbags and framed by tropical planting.

All five bedrooms have their own bathrooms, some with deep freestanding tubs, and two staff look after the house day to day. Umalas itself is one of the calmer corners of the south coast, with bakeries, bistros and boutiques close by and the beaches of Canggu and Seminyak a short drive away.
