Villa Saya

A stone wall on a Pererenan lane, a carved timber door under a shaggy alang-alang thatch, and then the plot opens into water. Villa Saya is built along a lap pool tiled in mottled green mosaic that runs almost the full length of the courtyard, banana and heliconia leaning in from both walls. At the near end a broad stone daybed is built into the deck at water level, cushioned and striped, set beneath a rendered arch lined with grey-and-white patterned cement tile — the villa’s one piece of theatre, and the spot everyone claims first. Echo Beach and La Brisa are a few minutes down the road, though the courtyard hears almost none of it.

The house faces the water across a wall of black-framed glass that slides away entirely, so the ground floor reads as a covered extension of the deck. Inside it is double height, with a teak staircase of open treads on a black steel stringer climbing through the volume and a low sectional sunk into the floor in front of a flat-screen. The kitchen is a curve of white stone with a black gas hob, teak cabinetry and woven bar stools pulled up to it; oversized rattan basket pendants hang over both the island and the dining table, which seats six beneath a ceiling of split bamboo. Cooking here is genuinely practical rather than decorative.

Two king bedrooms share the same language: pitched ceilings of split bamboo on dark rafters, platform beds on solid teak bases, a round woven mirror or a pair of rattan pendants, and a desk by the glass for anyone who has to work. Both are en-suite, and the bathrooms are where this villa spends its money — a freestanding oval tub in each, one behind sheer curtains against a full wall of patterned cement tile with twin rain showers alongside, the other angled to a window that catches the sunset over the rooftops. Teak vanities carry twin stone basins under oval rattan-framed mirrors, and a guest cloakroom off the living room keeps the count to two and a half.

Beyond the pool a second lounge sits under a bamboo pergola, a long striped sectional around low timber tables, shaded all afternoon; a macrame hammock hangs in a glass-walled pocket of planting off the living room for the hour after lunch. Staff come daily to clean, a welcome drink is waiting, and towels for the pool and the bathroom, fast Wi-Fi, a safe and the concierge are part of the stay. Everything else — breakfast, a private cook, airport transfers, a car or a scooter, massage, a nanny, a pool fence, day tours — is arranged on request. At a hundred and fifty square metres for four guests, it suits two couples or a small family who want Canggu at arm’s length.

Villa Saya is a small house that behaves like a large one: everything faces the water, and the water runs from the gate to the back wall. Mornings belong to the pool, afternoons to the pergola under the bamboo, and the beach clubs at Echo and Pererenan sit close enough to reach on a whim and far enough to forget.
