Villa Vesna 7

Gang Kamelia is one of the narrow lanes that peels off the Berawa road and runs out into the paddy, and Villa Vesna 7 sits at the end of it behind a pair of dark timber gates. The plot is small and used completely: a lap pool down one side of a walled courtyard in pale stone, fan palms and travellers palms planted tight against the render, and a two-storey house of white plaster and black-framed glass along the other. Turn around inside and the back wall is glass as well, and beyond it there is nothing but rice — a field that starts where the terrace ends and runs out to a line of coconut palms.

The living room is the whole point of the house. It goes up two storeys to a fan turning on a raked ceiling, floors laid in polished terrazzo, walls hand-sculpted in white plaster with tall pointed niches cut into them and every corner rounded off. A curved boucle sofa curls round low sculptural tables on a jute rug facing a screen on the wall, and an open-tread timber staircase climbs one side on a glass balustrade to the mezzanine. Light arrives from both long sides at once, pool on one and paddy on the other, so the room changes colour twice a day without anyone touching a switch.

The kitchen is at the far end, sage-green joinery under a slab of white marble with leather-and-timber stools pulled up to it, an oven, a stove and enough counter for somebody who intends to cook. The dining table is marble too, set against the glass so that lunch happens with the field in front of you. The single bedroom has a king bed beneath an oval mirror, a full wall of wardrobes, a desk at the window for the days that turn into work, and its own bathroom in terrazzo and timber with a round stone basin and a walk-in shower behind glass.

For a house this size the service is disproportionate: staff come daily to clean, a welcome drink is waiting, and towels, fast Wi-Fi, a safe and the concierge are included in the rate. Breakfast, a car with or without a driver, a scooter, a massage in the living room, a nanny, laundry, a table booked somewhere good and a day out among the temples all run through the same team. A hundred and twenty square metres for two, three or four kilometres from Berawa, Batu Bolong and Canggu beaches, with the beach clubs near enough for dinner and far enough that you sleep to frogs rather than bass. It suits a couple, or one person working from Bali who wants a view worth looking up for.

Villa Vesna 7 is a small, exact house that spends everything it has on two things: the height of one room and the field behind it. Come for a fortnight of slow mornings at the marble table, an afternoon swim in the strip of water outside, and a green view that nobody has built on yet.
