Nusa Penida Day Trip — The Complete Guide
The photograph that launched a thousand Bali trips — a T-rex-shaped headland wrapped around a perfect white cove — is Nusa Penida. The island is rugged, dramatic and bigger than it looks, which makes a well-planned Nusa Penida day trip the difference between a magical day and a rushed one. Here’s how to get it right.
Getting to Nusa Penida
Fast boats leave from Sanur across the morning and take about 45 minutes. Basing yourself on the east coast keeps the early start painless — a villa such as Villa Casis in Sanur is a short hop from the jetty. Book a boat ticket the day before in peak season, and aim for the first departure to beat the crowds at the headline viewpoints.
West Coast or East Coast?
Penida is too large to cover in one day, so choose a side:
- West coast (most popular): Kelingking Beach (the T-rex cliff), Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong and Crystal Bay. The classic first-timer’s loop.
- East coast (quieter): Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach — equally stunning, far fewer people, but a longer, rougher drive.
Trying to do both in a day means spending it in a car. Pick one, savour it, and come back for the other.
Practical Tips
Roads are steep and patchy, so hire a driver rather than a scooter unless you’re a confident rider. Bring cash, reef shoes and plenty of water — facilities are limited. The descents to Kelingking and Diamond Beach are serious staircases; wear proper shoes and take your time.
Make It Part of an Island-Hopping Trip
Penida pairs naturally with its calmer neighbour — see our Nusa Lembongan complete guide for a two-island plan. With a villa on Bali’s east coast as your base (more in our Sanur guide), you can spread the islands across separate days rather than cramming them in.
When to Visit
Go in the dry season (April–October) for the calmest crossings and bluest water; manta rays gather off the south coast for much of the year. Our best time to visit Bali guide breaks down the seasons month by month.
