Villa Adiwarna

Limestone-clad steps climb from a quiet Bingin lane to a white-rendered house with reed-thatched eaves, and the first thing you see through the gate is water. A green-tiled plunge pool fills a small walled courtyard, with a built-in cushioned bench along one side, timber stools for a morning coffee and red and green cordylines against the walls. Three little arched windows are cut into the courtyard wall, and at dusk they glow like lanterns above the pool. It is an intimate, carefully made house for two, where every room connects to somewhere to sit outside.

Tall black-framed arched doors swing open from the courtyard into the living space. A sunken lounge runs along one wall, its long built-in sofa facing a carved timber coffee table on a round woven rug, with display niches of vases and carvings above and a Smart TV for evenings in. Behind it, the kitchen is warm timber and white stone: an island, a black fridge-freezer, a hob and a floating shelf, with a timber dining table beneath two woven pendants. White stairs rise along the back wall, and the whole ground floor is bright, calm and cool, with air conditioning and fast Wi-Fi and a spot to work if you must.

Upstairs, the bedroom suite looks through a pair of arched glass doors to a thin line of blue ocean beyond the green hills of the Bukit. The bed sits against a softly arched headboard niche with pendant lamps either side, a built-in desk and shelving along one wall, and a television for lazy mornings. The ensuite has a stone-look basin on timber cabinetry and a glass-screened rain shower under a high window. The balcony is the reason to book: a built-in outdoor bathtub and cushioned bench under a thatched canopy, screened by timber slats and open to the hills and the evening light.

Staff clean daily and look after the pool and garden during the week, and a concierge team can arrange breakfast in the villa, a private cook, massages, airport transfers, a car with a driver, surf lessons and days out among the temples and beaches of the peninsula. Dreamland and Bingin beaches are both about two kilometres away, with Balangan and Padang Padang a little further. It suits honeymooners and couples who want a design-led base with two private places to unwind, the plunge pool below and the bathtub above, rather than a large estate.
