Villa House SJ

Villa House SJ is pure contemporary Bali: long, low volumes of charred-dark timber and pale concrete set into a garden of palms and old shade trees in Pererenan, the calmer, greener neighbour to Canggu. From the street it gives little away, but inside the walls everything opens up to lawn, water and sky, and the mood is quiet, private and quietly dramatic, especially when the evening light turns the facade gold.

A long infinity pool runs the length of the garden, lined with sunloungers and backed by floor-to-ceiling glass, so the living spaces feel like part of the landscape. The glass-walled lounge has deep sofas and a sculptural black staircase, the dining table seats twelve beside a sleek stone kitchen, and a separate games room with a pool table and television gives everyone somewhere to drift off to. Up top, a planted rooftop deck looks out over the treetops and towards the valley.

The six bedrooms are generous and calm, with timber floors, soft tailored beds and walls of glass onto greenery; several come with their own walk-in dressing rooms and stone-clad bathrooms with deep tubs and rain showers. A team of four looks after housekeeping during the stay, and Pererenan Beach, its cafés and the restaurants of Canggu are all a short drive away.
