Tucked behind a lantern-lit lane in Nelayan, the old fishing village on the Canggu coast, Villa Teresa 3 feels like a private Balinese garden that happens to end at the sea. Around three thousand square metres of lawns, lily ponds and water fountains unfold between thatched pavilions, frangipani trees and stepping-stone paths, and the sound of the surf is never far away.

A fifteen-metre pool, edged with a stone sun deck and shaded loungers, sits at the heart of the grounds. The main pavilion rises over two storeys: downstairs, an open dining room and a stainless-steel kitchen where the resident chef prepares Balinese dishes; upstairs, a fully enclosed lounge with a large screen for film nights and a terrace that looks out over the rooftops to the ocean. Breakfast is included, and lunch and dinner can be cooked at the cost of the groceries, so long lazy days at home are easy.

The three bedrooms each occupy their own thatched garden bungalow, giving everyone privacy, and every one has a king bed and an open-air bathroom with a bathtub and garden shower. Sunset walks start on the local beach, Echo Beach and Batu Bolong are minutes away, and guests have complimentary access to Finns Recreation Club. Travelling with a bigger group?
