The Joglo at Umah Sunset
Why We Recommend The Joglo at Umah Sunset
Set on a gentle rise among the rice fields of Melinggih Kelod, around six kilometres from central Ubud, The Joglo at Umah Sunset is a traditional Javanese-Balinese timber house built for slowing down. An infinity pool stretches out along a wooden deck towards the paddies, with turquoise loungers under fringed parasols and a carved, peaked-roof gazebo strewn with cushions at its edge. As the name suggests, evenings here are all about the sunset glowing over the fields.
Inside, everything is warm, honey-coloured wood: ornate carved panels, a soaring joglo roof and antique-style furniture, softened by plush sofas and patterned rugs. The open-sided living room flows into a semi-outdoor dining area with rice-field views and a modern kitchen with a breakfast counter, while a koi pond and walkway lead you in from a lush tropical garden with its own thatched swing bale. It is quiet, rural and deeply peaceful, with birdsong for a soundtrack.
Both bedrooms sit upstairs, each with a king bed in crisp white linen, air-conditioning, a cushioned day nook, a small work desk and its own access to the balcony overlooking the fields. Bathrooms are generous and wood-lined, with deep freestanding tubs beneath picture windows framing the greenery. Breakfast is included each morning and the staff look after housekeeping, the pool and security, making this a lovely hideaway for a couple or a small family.
