Villa Uma Priyayi

Antique Javanese joglo pavilions, with their steep terracotta roofs and hand-painted beams, have been reassembled on a hillside in Ungasan, in Uluwatu, to create Villa Uma Priyayi. A ten-metre infinity pool, anchored by a carved stone monolith at its edge, looks out across green hills towards the evening sky, and the whole place has the weathered warmth of reclaimed timber and natural stone.

The living pavilion faces straight over the pool, with sofas, a TV and an eight-seat dining table cut from a single slab of wood. All four bedrooms sit around the pool deck and open directly onto it through wooden doors, each with a bed raised on a timber pedestal, gauzy canopies and a corner daybed. Bathrooms are a highlight, several of them open to the sky, with freestanding tubs carved from natural stone. At the edge of the garden, a bale with a deep daybed is the place to be at sunset.

With around 1,500 square metres of grounds, the villa feels secluded, yet Melasti, Green Bowl and Pandawa beaches are all within a short drive, along with the clifftop Pura Luhur Uluwatu, Uluwatu’s beach clubs and Jimbaran’s seafood grills. Table tennis, a barbecue and in-villa massages fill the slower days at home.
