Villa Carina rises in crisp white tiers out of thick green bush on the hills of Uluwatu, with a rooftop lounge that looks right over the treetops to the Indian Ocean. Step through the carved timber gate and a quiet walled courtyard opens up, with a turquoise pool, tropical planting and a traditional thatched gazebo, so the whole place feels tucked away even though Uluwatu’s beaches and cliff-top cafés are only minutes off.

The ground floor is built around the pool, with beanbags on the deck and glass doors sliding open from the living room and bedrooms straight onto the water. Indoors there is a relaxed lounge with a smart TV against a textured stone wall, a modern kitchen in warm timber and a glass dining table for eight, plus a dedicated workstation for anyone keeping an eye on emails. Climb to the top and the rooftop terrace is the real prize: soft lawn, lounging cushions, a shaded counter with stools and wide views to the sea that come into their own at sunset.

The four bedrooms each have air conditioning and their own bathroom, and the master suite adds a freestanding bathtub. Daily housekeeping, a gardener and a personal guest assistant keep everything running smoothly, and a chef, massages and babysitting can be arranged. Uluwatu Temple, Single Fin and the surf at Uluwatu Beach are all close by.
