About This Villa

Why We Recommend Desa Roro Estate

Most seven-bedroom villas in Canggu are modern concrete compounds designed for large groups who want a party base. Desa Roro Estate is the opposite. This is a collection of traditional Javanese Joglo pavilions set within 1,700 square metres of walled tropical garden in Berawa, built from centuries-old reclaimed teak with high-vaulted ceilings, carved timber columns and gladak roofing. The estate comprises two properties joined by a wooden gate: the five-bedroom Villa Desa Roro and the two-bedroom Villa Desa Roro Dua. Together they accommodate up to fourteen guests across seven air-conditioned ensuite bedrooms, each furnished with a king-size bed. The architectural result feels less like a holiday rental and more like a private heritage compound, which is precisely what makes it worth considering over the larger but less characterful alternatives in the area.

The master bedroom occupies its own standalone pavilion with a canopied four-poster bed, a walk-in wardrobe, a freestanding bathtub and both indoor and outdoor rain showers. The remaining four bedrooms in the main villa are arranged in pairs across two further Joglo structures, each pair sharing a private terrace and a furnished communal lounge. Villa Desa Roro Dua’s two bedrooms sit in the guest house pavilion and can be opened to or enclosed from the main living area, a practical arrangement for families with children who need proximity at night. Every room features polished hardwood floors, oriental rugs, Indonesian artwork and the kind of handcrafted teak furniture that gives the whole estate the atmosphere of a curated gallery rather than a decorated villa.

Outdoor space is generous. Two 12-metre saltwater swimming pools anchor the garden, bordered by a wooden deck with sun loungers, parasols and a traditional bale daybed. A shallow section in one pool caters to younger swimmers. An elevated yoga studio overlooks the water, which is a thoughtful touch on its own but becomes genuinely valuable when you consider that Desa Seni, one of Bali’s most respected yoga and wellness retreats, sits immediately next door and opens its daily classes to the public. The Berawa location places you roughly 850 metres from the beach on foot, with the cafes and restaurants of Berawa village within easy walking distance and Seminyak’s dining and nightlife about ten to fifteen minutes south by car.

What sets the estate apart from booking the two villas separately is the combined staff and shared garden. A ten-person team handles housekeeping, security, gardening and guest arrangements around the clock, while a private chef can be engaged for in-villa meals at additional cost. The wooden gate between the properties can remain open for one large group or closed when two families prefer a degree of separation. That flexibility, combined with the Joglo architecture and the Berawa position, makes Desa Roro Estate a genuinely distinctive option for gatherings that call for space, character and proximity to the coast without the noise of central Canggu.

Desa Roro Estate earns its appeal through architectural character and garden setting rather than modern amenities or beachfront position. The Joglo pavilions, the twin pools, the proximity to Desa Seni and the flexibility of the two-villa format give it a personality that is difficult to find elsewhere in Canggu. For groups of up to fourteen who value heritage, space and a genuine sense of place over contemporary polish, it is one of the most compelling options in Berawa at $853 per night.
