Villa Elementa

The Bukit is a plateau of walled lanes and half-built dreams, and Villa Elementa announces itself simply: a white wall, a curved parapet, and a raked roofline that lifts at one corner like a sail. Step through and the plot turns out to be far longer than it is wide — a pool laid along one side with a shallow shelf at its head, travertine underfoot, and palms and heliconia planted tight against the boundary so the greenery does the work the walls cannot. Bingin Beach is seven minutes down the road; from inside the garden you would not guess there was a road at all.

The living room is the surprise. It rises the full two storeys, and light arrives from the pool doors and from above, bouncing off pale plaster until the whole space glows. A deep sectional sofa in oatmeal faces a Smart TV, a low timber table carries a Balinese teapot, and oversized woven pendants hang like inverted baskets from the rafters. The dining table seats six under its own rattan shade, and the kitchen behind it runs along a stone counter with a mosaic splashback, an oven, a coffee maker and a breakfast island where you will end up eating most mornings.

A concrete stair climbs from the dining end to the mezzanine, and the bedroom is up there in the open — no door, just a timber-clad raked ceiling, a wall of carved wooden discs above the bed, and a king mattress dressed in white with a green runner across it. A freestanding mirror leans in one corner, a wardrobe and a small writing desk sit behind, and a television faces the bed for nights you decide not to go out. The bathroom below is worth the descent: a stone vessel basin under a round rattan-lit mirror, a mosaic-tiled walk-in rain shower, and a second shower outdoors on its own screened deck.

Outside, two chocolate beanbags sit under a fringed Balinese umbrella at the far end of the pool, which is where most afternoons quietly go. Staff clean daily and tend the pool and garden two or three times a week, a welcome drink is waiting when you arrive, and the concierge will organise breakfast, a private cook, an in-villa massage, laundry, scooter or car hire and surf classes. Dreamland Beach is nine minutes away, El Kabron seven, and Uluwatu Temple sits under four kilometres south — close enough to reach the cliffs for sunset and be back before the ice melts.

Elementa is built for two and makes no apology for it — one bedroom, one bathroom, and a living room far larger than either of them needs. Couples take it for a week between the surf and the sunset bars, and it works just as well for a few nights when the Bukit itself is the whole point of the trip.
