Las Casas 17

The address is Jalan Pantai Cemongkak, a lane running down towards the Bingin cliffs, and the front door is an arched slab of timber set into white render with the number seventeen beside it. Push it open and the whole plot is a courtyard: pale flagstone, a pool with rounded corners and curved steps, planter beds of banana and heliconia against the walls, and a built-in bench with cushions where the shade falls. A timber-battened roof runs out over the terrace, a fringed rattan pendant hanging beneath it. A hundred square metres, one storey, finished in 2025 and still looking it.

Inside is a single room, and the architecture does the dividing instead of walls. Arched openings and shallow niches are cut straight into the white plaster; a marble-topped island on a timber base sits in the middle, doing duty as kitchen bench, breakfast bar and dining table, with turned timber stools pulled up to it. Along one side runs a built-in banquette sofa deep enough to spend an afternoon on, facing a television set into the wall. Woven rattan pendants hang everywhere. The kitchen end has a gas hob, a sink under a window full of leaves, a fridge, a microwave and a toaster.

The bed occupies its own arched alcove at the far end, with plaster shelving built into the wall, a rattan pendant on each side and a long slot of clerestory window letting light in above the headboard without letting anyone look in. Air conditioning and a ceiling fan both run. The bathroom is the surprise: a poured-stone trough basin under an arched mirror, brass tapware, and a walk-in shower lined floor to ceiling in stacked grey-green tile. There is a second shower outdoors in the same tile, open to the banana leaves, which is the one you will use.

Staff clean daily and tend the pool and garden two or three times a week; a welcome drink, bath and pool towels, fast Wi-Fi and a safe come with the room, and check-in is private, with someone reachable at any hour. The concierge handles airport transfers, a car or a scooter, breakfast, a cook, massage at the villa, laundry and day trips. Bingin and Dreamland beaches are both about eight minutes away on a bike, Padang Padang a little further, and Uluwatu Temple seven kilometres down the coast road. This is a two-person villa, and it is built like one.

Las Casas 17 was finished in 2025 and reads like it: crisp render, brass, tile, one room that knows exactly what it is for. Two people, a pool with nobody else in it, and the Bukit’s best surf a short ride down the hill.
